I still class myself as a novice detectorist but the longer I do this strange and wonderful hobby the better I become. I soon found that my life would be easier if I had some ‘proper kit’ so to speak.

The combination of being a 6ft 2 chubster and years of doing a job which causes a few muscular / skeletal problems have caused me like many others to have a bad back. I’m also at the age where we tend to develop arthritis in our lower back. Happens around the 40ish age to most.

Previously I was using a spade customised by myself. The blade was good at getting in the soil as I had trimmed it and ground cutting teeth in both sides. But it was quite short as I didn’t want to lug a heavy spade with me over the furrows.

My problem is after an hour I’d be in severe pain and I’d keep that pain for most of the week.

I researched detecting spades and saw some good write ups about the Ada range.

So I phoned my detecting Guru Graeme for advice. He pointed me towards the Spartan. A bit cheaper than the Gladius but Graemes advice has never let me down. It came the very next day which is awesome as I ordered it at lunch the previous day from the other end if the country.

I used if for the first time yesterday and the difference from my old spade is like night and day.
I’d never thought I’d ever say that digging holes would be a pleasure. But with the spartan it was “Knife through butter” litteraly.
Perfect height for my height and minimum problems with my back which is the big big bonus for me. I doubled my dig time and to me that makes it a winner.

    So glad I bought it.
